Menstrual Disorder Classification

Menstrual Disorder is classified broadly in three types:

Amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea: Amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea is also known as no bleeding or too little bleeding. It can be classified in two types primary (menstruation not started at all in a girl.) and Secondary (menstruation starts in a girl at the appropriate age but stops after a short period may be 3 months or so.)
Dysmenorrhea: Dysmenorrhea is a type of painful menstruation. Lower abdominal pain and pelvic pains are the main symptoms.
Menorrhagia: Excessive bleeding that lasts more than 3-4 days with blood loss of over 80 ml is considered as excessive bleeding or Menorrhagia.

Main causes of menstrual disorder are:
- Uncontrolled Diabetes
- Adolescence
- Eating Disorders
- Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism
- Medications like as antiepileptic or antipsychotics.

Menstrual Cycle

Menstrual cycle is the changes in the uterus and ovary for the purpose of reproduction. These changes occur for the production of eggs and for the preparation of the uterus of pregnancy.

The menstrual cycle length ranges from 21 to 35 days and with the average length of 28 days. Each menstrual cycle is divided into three phases based on uterus (uterine cycle) and Ovary (ovarian cycle) events. The Ovarian cycle consists of follicular phase, ovulation and luteal phase and uterine cycle is divided into menstrual, proliferative and secretion phase.

In menstrual cycle many changes occurs in the female reproductive system. First menstruation of women is known as menarche and occurs around 12-13 years of age. Any changes or disorder in this cycle is known as menstrual irregularities or menstrual disorder.
